Obligation after entering the Slovak Republic:


REPORTING NOTICE OF THE STAY (HLÁSENIE POBYTU) at the Foreign Police Department

  • if PhD student is accommodated in private accommodation – he/she reports his/her stay individually within 10 working days from entering Slovakia
  • if PhD student is accommodated in the SAS dormitory or hotel. hostel, etc. – his/her stay is reported by the accommodation facility
  • The accommodation facility or the foreigner will fill out the “Notice of the stay” form and ensure its submission/delivery to the relevant Foreign Police department. If the “Notice of the stay” form is sent by post, we recommend sending it by registered letter.
  • he/she can stay in Slovakia without further obligations up to 90 days from entering the country, after this 90-day period the EU/EEA/Swiss national must apply for registration of residence in Slovakia within 30 days

REGISTRATION OF RESIDENCE OF EU/EEA/SWISS NATIONAL – DOCTORAL STUDENT

  • in PERSON – at the competent Foreign Police Department
  • or electronically
  • for IN PERSON registration of the stay, the reservation of the appointment in advance via online system is required
  • registration of the stay is free of charge
  • confirmation about the residence registration of an EU/EEA/Swiss national is issued by the Foreign Police Department on the day of submitting a complete application
  • if you do not submit proof of accommodation – the confirmation of registration of residence will also include the address of the municipality where you will be staying

Required documents:

  • „Application for registration of right of residence of Union Citizen“/„Žiadosť o registráciu práva občana Únie“ – filled in Slovak language, signed by the applicant, you can find under the name Application for renewal of the temporary residence
  • valid passport or identification card
  • document proving the purpose of the stay – confirmation of admission for the study
  • A European Union citizen who cannot submit an employment contract a trade license or a confirmation from school can provide:
    • proof that he/she has sufficient means (as of July 2026,the minimum subsistence level of EUR 295.22 in cash or a bank account balance confirmation) and
    • health insurance in Slovakia (confirmation from a health insurance company or EU Health Insurance card).

RESIDENCE DOCUMENT :

General information :

  • an EU/EEA/Swiss citizen can apply for a residence document (plastic card), the so-called “EU citizen residence card”
  • it is processed IN PERSON – at the relevant Foreign Police Department
  • or electronically
  • the document is valid for 10 years

Required documents:

With your application you must submit:

  • document proving accommodation – in Slovak language – one of the following – notarised:
  • If you own the property, you do not need to submit an affidavit.
  • Notarized affidavit of the property owner on the provision of accommodation (signed by all property owners); or  
  • Electronic consent from a natural person or accommodation provider on the provision of accommodation, delivered via an electronic service established for this purpose; or 
  • Notarized tenancy agreement (in which the applicant is indicated as the tenant/one of the tenants; all signatures must be notarised); or 
  • Confirmation from an accommodation facility (hotel, dormitory…) on the provision of accommodation.

Signatures on affidavits and lease agreements must be officially verified (with the exception of affidavits signed at the Foreign Police).

Fees and delivery :

  • The issuance of the Residence Document of an EU citizen (“kartička”) can take up to
    • 30 days (€10 fee paid in stamps or €5 for an electronic submission)
    • 2 days (€39 fee paid in stamps or €19.50 for an electronic submission)
  • counted from the date the application for the residence document was submitted at the Foreign Police in the case of an IN-PERSON application; or from the date the applicant’s biometric data are collected in the case of an ELECTRONIC application for the residence document.
  • At Foreign Police administrative fees are paid using the so-called „eKolok“ which can be purchased directly at the Foreign Police department via machine, or at the post office.
  • The EU citizen residence card is delivered by Slovak Post Office courier to the address specified in application and the EU citizen is contacted on the Slovak mobile number provided in the application..

Important information :

The Act on the Residence of Foreigners does not stipulate the obligation for EU citizens (only the possibility) to apply for a residence document (card), but in contact with some institutions (eg banks, insurance companies) this may greatly facilitate the completion of other formalities related to everyday life in Slovakia.
