Renewal of temporary residence for the purpose of study – doctoral student – third-country national

General information:

  • may be renewed (extended), even repeatedly
  • may be renewed for a maximum of five years
  • provided that the applicant continues to study in the territory of the Slovak Republic

Application is submitted:

  • in person at the relevant department of the Foreign Police after booking an appointment via the booking system
  • or electronically
  • no later than on the last day of validity of the current temporary residence
  • the Foreign Police Department will decide within 30 days of receiving the complete application

Required documents:

  • form – Application for renewal of temporary residence (can be found under “Žiadosť o obnovenie prechodného pobytu”) – completely filled in Slovak language, signed by applicant 
  • valid passport
  • current Slovak residence card
  • document proving continuation of full-time study – in Slovak
  • administrative fee for issuance and delivery of the residence card: 10€ (within 30 days) or 39€ (within 2 business days), or 5€/19,50€ for electronic submission
  • it is not required to submit document on accommodation
  • it is not required to submit Criminal Record Extract (it was submitted with the first application for temporary residence)

Important information:

  • documents must not be older than 90 days at the time of submission
  • photocopies of documents must be officially certified
  • If the applicant fails to submit all the necessary documents, he/she is required to submit missing documents within 30 days of submitting the application, otherwise the Foreign police will terminate the proceedings; this decision cannot be appealed. In justified cases, the Foreign police may extend the deadline by 15 days upon request.
  • Temporary residence is considered valid (only) in Slovakia until a decision on its renewal is made
  • During renewed temporary residence for the purpose of study, it is possible to engage in business activities. University students may work for a maximum of 80 hours per month without the need for additional permits or a change of residence status.

Fees and delivery :

  • The issuing of a residence card (“kartička”) can take up to 30 days (10€ fee paid in stamps) or expediously within 2 days (39€ fee paid in stamps) after decision = 30 days for decision + 30 (standard) or 2 days (express) for issuance of residence card
  • at the Foreign Police, fees are paid in stamps via eKolok, which can be obtained directly at the Foreign Police department in a vending machine or at selected post offices, online or via mobile application.
  • The residence card is delivered by Slovak Post Office courier to the address specified in application  after receiving of SMS notice from the Foreign Police to the Slovak mobile phone number specified in the application – the police informs the applicant that the residence was granted and until what date exactly it was granted.

Obligations of a third-country national after obtaining temporary residence:

  • Stay in Slovakia for more than half of the time of the granted temporary residence in a calendar year. This obligation does not apply if a person with a granted residence for the purpose of study applies for mobility in another member state.
  • Notify the Foreign Police in writing that he/she will stay outside the territory of the Slovak Republic for more than 180 days continuously.
