Important information: expiration of residence permit/residence card; rules for booking of appointment at the Foreing Police

In case your residence permit/residence card is going to expire soon, there is no need to panic if you are not successful in booking of appointment at the Foreign Police to apply for renewal or change of purpose of your residence permit.

Extraordinary situation declared in Slovakia on 26 February 2022 in connection with the mass influx of foreigners caused by the armed conflict on the territory of Ukraine is still in force.

The validity of temporary residence, permanent residence or tolerated stay, which would otherwise expire during the extraordinary situation, is extended until two months after the revocation of the extraordinary situation.

Information on booking of appointment

Due to the high interest of foreigners in granting/renewing residence on the territory of the Slovak Republic, it may happen that the booking system of the Ministry of Interior of SR (Foreign Police) does not currently have available dates for the relevant life situations.

For this reason, it is necessary to continuously monitor the availability of dates.

Third-countries nationals who apply for a first residence permit on the territory of the Slovak Republic and their chosen Foreign Police Department does not have a free date for submitting of application, are recommended to book appointment at the Foreing Police Department in another city that has free dates available. This applies only to third-countries nationals, not EU citizens and it applies only to first application for residence permit, not for renewal or change of purpose, not for long term or permanent residence applications, not for invitation verification, not for application for issuance of a residence card.

In case of contacting the Border and Foreign Police Directorate for an exception to provide “special” date for appointment, requests for exceptions are denied for the above-mentioned reasons.

The only exception possible:

Slovak Academy of Sciences researchers, Slovak Government scholarship holders, ERASMUS and ERASMUS + program students, university teachers and PhD students have the opportunity to apply for appointment for submitting first application for residence permit also via this specific form

When asking for appointment for a doctoral student/researcher via this specific form, it is necessary to attach a scanned document confirming the purpose of the stay (Hosting Agreement/Decision on admission to doctoral studies or Confirmation of studies/Confirmation of scholarship, etc.). The above-mentioned option applies only to the application for temporary residence of the doctoral student/researcher, not to the application for a national visa in the interest of the Slovak Republic, not to the applications of family members of the doctoral student/researcher, not to the application for renewal or change of purpose of temporary residence. When asking for appointment via this specific form, it is not possible to choose a date; it is assigned by the Foreign Police, that will send a statement by e-mail to the address given in the form.

We strongly recommend that the booking of appointment via this specific form should be performed by or with the help of the administrative personnel at the SAS institute (e.g. coordinator for foreign students and researches appointed at the SAS institute or mentor/Scientist in Charge of the student or researcher etc.)

General rules of the booking system

Appointment must be booked for the life situation (registration act) correctly, otherwise the Foreign Police will not deal with the application on the date of appoinment. It means the applicant has to choose correct options in the booking system – e.g. if he/she intends to apply for renewal of residence permit, the appoinment must be booked for renewal, not for applying for residence permit, etc.

Life situations (registration acts) that are not listed in the booking system (such as collecting of a residence permit or completing of documents to application) can be arranged without booked appointment, in working days of the Foreign Police Department (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) in time period from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM.

One specific person can make a maximum of two reservations per agenda within fifteen calendar days. The citizen is informed about exceeding the number of reservations during the reservation process. At the end of the process, the reservation is automatically checked and if the above criteria are not met, the reservation is automatically canceled.

If the Ministry of Interior of SR discovers that there are repeated violations of the reservation rules by a specific person, it reserves the right to block that person from making any reservations for a limited time. For the purposes of the reservation system, data on name, surname, telephone number, e-mail address or their mutual combination are considered to be a specific person.

The person who did not use their booked appointment and did not cancel it in time no later than 12 hours before the reservation will be blocked. Blocking lasts 60 calendar days from the unused reservation. The provider of booking system does not have any obligations for citizens due to this reservation restriction.
